Lineage Society

Lineage societies accept members based upon lineal descent from a specific group of ancestors. In order to qualify for a Lineage Society, you must be able to provide documentary proof that you are descended from the specific ancestor in question. The Criteria for Admission into lineage societies does vary from organization to organization, and admission for many of them is by invitation only.

Being Part of a Lineage Society

HEIRLINES Professional Genealogy Holiday PacakageMany people first get involved with tracing their family's genealogy because they are interested in joining a lineage or heritage society. Qualification for membership in a lineage society may be determined in a number of ways, including being an early settler in a specific area (i.e. First Families of Virginia) and military service (i.e. Daughters of the American Revolution or various Civil War Associations). In addition, others include ethnic/religious background (National Huguenot Society) and being a passenger on a specific ship (i.e. Mayflower passenger).

In order to join a particular society, you must carefully document your genealogy back to the person in your family who fits the specific criteria for membership in the society. The amount of documentation that will be required varies from one society to the next. Generally a considerable amount of detailed work and time is involved in completing an application for membership.

If this process and the compilation of documents that is required sounds extensive, the Professional Genealogists of Heirlines can help. Having been involved in tracing ancestors for more than 35 years, Heirlines can help you compile the information you need, document it appropriately and help you complete the necessary application.
